Warriors’ freshmen rise to the occasion

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL:

Britt, Calhoun help lift Alemany to title.

In a pressure-packed situation in one of the biggest games of their young careers, it was a pair of freshmen and a sophomore who rose to the occasion Thursday night to carry the Alemany girls’ basketball team. The Warriors relied on ninth-graders Breanna Calhoun and Nia Britt, along with sophomore forward Hannah Johnson, to finally sustain momentum against Mission League rival Chaminade in the invitational bracket championship game of the West Coast Holiday Festival at Burroughs High.

Calhoun and Johnson sparked an eight-point run early in the fourth quarter and Britt anchored a defensive effort that held Chaminade without a field goal the final 5:50 as Alemany pulled away for a 56-44 victory, securing its second straight tournament crown following a White Division title at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Arizona.

“They’re just special kids. They’re gamers and most important, they’re winners,” Alemany coach Bryan Camacho said. “Nia Britt is a freshman guarding one of the best players in California (in Chaminade senior Annie Tarakchian), and Breanna struggled a little bit, but she stuck with it and she went on an 8-0 run by herself and she did it with confidence.”

Calhoun, an all-tournament selection, scored 12 of her 16 points in the fourth, including two 3-pointers. Johnson, the tournament MVP, had 18 points, with Leslie Lopez-Wood adding 15 points for the Warriors (13-1).

“I started out a little flat, but I just played through it and kept going like coach tells us to do,” Calhoun said. “In the fourth quarter, I had more confidence in my shot. It’s special because it’s Chaminade. We’ve been preparing for this game for a long time.”

Johnson had 15 through the first three quarters, in addition to slowing down the Princeton- bound Tarakchian (11 points) and Mi’Chael Wright (seven points), who both produced double-doubles the past two games for the Eagles (10-3).

“We knew we needed to stop those two because they’re the key players,” Johnson said. “We knew if we stopped them, we would get the ‘W’. When we did get on the run, we just knew we were going to keep going. No matter if we’re ahead or we’re behind, we always feel like we’re going to come through and get the win.”

Nia Britt Exclusive with Curt Sandoval Channel 7 News

Curt Sandoval Exclusive

MISSION HILLS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Bishop Alemany High School in Mission Hills has enjoyed a wealth of athletic success throughout the years. They've sent athletes to a number of professional sports. Their next future star could be a girl named Nia Britt.

Bishop Alemany is a private Catholic school in the San Fernando Valley. It's where you'll find Nia Britt, a freshman that you could be hearing about for years to come. She's only 14. Everyone I meet says it wouldn't surprise me if this is an Olympian in the making.

"I definitely agree with that," said Bryan Camacho, Alemany girls basketball coach. "As a coach, as a teacher here at Bishop Alemany, we want to support her each and every way possible."

Any of Britt's teammates on the basketball team would be thrilled if their performances led to their name in the school paper. Britt, though, was recently featured in Sports Illustrated.

"I was shocked," said Britt. "I couldn't believe it. My mom, my dad, one of them told me that you're in Sports Illustrated and I was like, 'What? Are you serious?'"

S.I. noticed that Britt had set a national Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) record in the shotput in Wichita, Kansas, this summer. Then, just a week later, she set the Junior Olympic record in New Orleans in her age group.

"Honestly I started crying. I was trying so hard to hold it in but I couldn't," said Britt.

What did that teach her?

"Just to never give up. Never think down on myself, even if I make one mistake. Don't think down," said Britt.

In the spring she'll move up to a heavier shotput, and the mathematical calculations suggest she could set a school record in her first meet as a freshman.

"She throws an 8.8-pound ball and her accomplishments right now, where she's at from the Junior Olympics and her national rankings have her in the top of our lists of most 12th-graders, and she's an incoming 9th-grader," said Dave Urbach, Alemany track and field coach.

Britt has an intangible factor that you simply can't coach or train: Great DNA. Her cousin is Tennessee Titans wide receiver Kenny Britt. Her other cousin is Jeff Teague of the Atlanta Hawks. Mix in a father who's a personal trainer, and she's like an arrow directed on a path toward success.

"I know I'll get there one day," said Britt. "I just know that it'll take a lot of hard work."

Nia Britt AUU 2011 Record holder Featured in Sports Illustrated

What does Alemany freshman Nia Britt have in common with golfing great Tiger Woods, tennis legend John McEnroe and basketball Hall of Famer Lew Alcindor?

They all appeared in Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd.

Britt will be featured in the Aug. 22 issue of SI after twice setting a national Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympics record in the shot put earlier this month. Her longest toss was 51 feet 6.25 inches.

Britt certainly has some athletic genes in her favor; she is the cousin of Atlanta Hawks guard Jeff Teague, Tennessee Titans receiver Kenny Britt,Notre Dame College Dak Britt and Kentucky guard Marquis Teague.
